Johannesburg – Google South Africa on Thursday named Stephen Newton, former Google head of analytics and commerce for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), as new country manager to run its local operation in Johannesburg.

Newton brings extensive online experience to his new role, helping to increase the flow of information in South Africa by getting businesses online and helping South Africans benefit from Google’s free online services, the company said in a statement.

Newton will take up his position on July 1 2009.

“It’s an exciting time here, with the 2010 World Cup just around the corner,” says Newton.

“South Africa is the continent’s Internet and e-commerce hub, and the coming years promise significant growth for small businesses wanting to benefit from increased connectivity.

“Google remains excited about improving access to information for local South African users, and bringing our learnings in search and advertising from around the world to Africa’s entrepreneurial heart.”

I sometimes think that the only real reason that Google should come to South Africa, and Africa for that matter, is to stimulate and direct policy. I can honestly not say that I see them as performing a role as an agency, or for that matter in any other capacity as a policy driver – aiming to expand broadband penetration in SA.

@ Uno – I have to agree with you. In my personal opinion I don’t see it adding much value to what we’ve done or accomplished by ourselves thus far, maybe I’m wrong, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Hope Mr. Newton handles the public a bit better than his predecessor…

Mr. Newton is a people pleaser and hardworker. Keep an open mind. If there is anyone that can change opinions regarding goggle-you have him. Join me in wishing Mr. Newton all the luck and sucess in his new position.

    Please can you help.

I have recently started a business called Mature Resources and Software Training related to the IT Sector around the Country.

My e-mail comes up as SPAM to all my clients and is affecting my business as legitimate.

My service provider and everyone I have spoken to does not and cannot fix the problem.

I do hope you can help me.

    Many Thanks
    Karin

Thats all very interesting, but I must say that we have some business for google SA, just its a pity that there are no contact details available for them. I suppose they won’t last to long after all…
