IPL 2009 Results – Opening weekend

The 2009 IPL opened with a bang this year in Cape Town, South Africa. Despite inclement weather and some rain delays on the second day, the majority of cricket was played on the opening weekend.

The first match of the 2009 season saw the Chennai Super Kings up against the Mumbai Indians. The Mumbai Indians came out on top with a 19 run victory. The Indians scored 165 with Icon player Sachin Tendulkar pitching in with an unbeaten 59 from 49 balls. Mathew Hayden showed some fight before falling to Sanath Jayasuriya for 44.

In the second match of the day the Banglore Royal Challengers clashed with the defending cahmpions The Rajasthan Royals. The Royals were completely outplayed and were all out forĀ  the lowest total ever, a modest 58 runs after the Banglore Royal Challengers managed a respectable 133 for 8. Rahul Dravid top scored for the Challengers with 66 and for the Royals no batsmen could top 11.

Match 3 brought the rain the Newlands cricket ground with the outcome being decided via the Duckworth Lewis method. The Kings XI Punjab managed a total of 104 in a shortened 12 over session. With the rain coming down more substantially the Delhi Daredevils required 54 runs from 6 overs which they scored quite convincingly from the bat of Virender Sehwag without even losing a wicket.

Match 4 saw The Deccan Chargers take charge and beating the Kolkata Knight Riders quite easily with Herschelle Gibbs in fine form. The Deccan Chargers cruised to a winning total of 104 from a mere 13.1 overs. RP Singh was the pick of the bowlers taking 4 wickets for only 22 runs and Gibbs top scoring with 44.
